Hillary Clinton's Advice to Small Business Owners: RTDD
Hillary Clinton, before her forays into national politics, was a well-regarded litigator in Arkansas. Mrs. Clinton, when proofreading legal briefs from her junior associates, was known to scribble "RTDD" into the margins--shorthand for "read the damn documents." This was her unique way of scolding those who failed to fully read important background materials.
Mrs. Clinton's not-so-gentle advice is something small business owners should take to heart when it comes to insurance. Whenever clients (prospective or current) come onsite to your business, the potential for liability jumps. Part of the strategy for addressing that liability is insurance.
Unfortunately, no matter what your insurance agent tells you, you will never fully understand your coverage unless you read your policies. So, regardless of your political views, take the "RTDD" maxim to heart. Read (and understand) your insurance policies.
This is especially sage advice if you run a business where the risk of client injury is elevated (CrossFit affiliates, for example). Check out this recent article from the CrossFit Journal for some additional strategies for addressing liability in the fitness industry.
